Gloss Varnish for modelers, Pledge changes a logo, but keeps the formula the same

For years modelers have known about Future Floor polish as a cheap, effective and durable product for gloss clear coating models.  Several years ago the Future logo and formula was bought by Pledge.  Well, recently Pledge "Floor Care Finish" has started disappearing from store shelves.  There are people selling it on eBay at down right goofy prices, but it appears this was just a rebranding effort by Pledge.

Pledge has a new look, and it is called Pledge "revive it" I bought a bootle this week and took it home to see if it was the same product.  Here are the results:

#1 the stock number for the items are exactly the same.

The long and short of this is, same stuff different package.  I did a quick test on a model tonight and it performed exactly the same way.

For those that don't know, this is one of the cheapest and most durable options for gloss clear coating your models.  I do it to seal in acrylic paints prior to oil washing and to prep acrylic surfaces for decals.  At 6 dollars for 27 Ounces, it is way cheaper that any branded modeling product.

Like I said earlier, military modelers, you know the guys who count rivets and argue over which shade of green you painted your tank, have been using this stuff for years.  It simply works well.  It also is useful in coating clear canopy for airplane models.

It is a good base for washes and Matt Kane, formerly of MKA swears by the stuff, using it for stage by stage model sealing and for decal prep.  His super duper secret wash for all models has this at the base.  The truth is, it is great binder medium for inks of all kinds and should be something people  look at for constructing large quantities of cheap wash for terrain.

Last, the gloss look can be knocked back quickly by using any of the matte varnish products out there.  I prefer AK interactive's Ultra Matte.  But on larger pieces, I also swear by Krylon Artist grade matte varnish, which comes in large spray cans and can be found at Michaels and Hobby Lobby craft stores.
