Heat temper/discoloration effect, How to

A lot of people are asking me how I did the heat effect on the Mechanicum Knight's cannon that i just finished.  Well here is a quick description.

Heat discoloration is common in metals, especially steels and steel alloys.  This is a picture of the real look on a header on a motorcycle.

This effect looks really good on rapid-fire weapon systems, machine guns, rapid cannons, metals, large volkites and muffler/exhaust systems.

To pull this off here are your friends.

Simply paint and wash the weapon in the steel colors of your choice and wash with your normal process.  Then lightly AirBrush bands going from Gold, to purple, to blue to a good sooty black.  The majority of the time here is in changing paints.  The Knight's cannon took about 4 minutes, it's a SUPER EASY technique.  Vallejo Game Air Paints are awesome.  I do prefer a couple model air colors though.
