GW Air brings back FW AirBrush line, are they the same?

I have only tested a handful of colors and I can say that with the exception of one, it appears to be a match across the line.  I tested new paints against my remaining paint stocks from years ago, the one color difference you see below I will explain in that photo.  All paints were given three coats per sample.

Painting some scatter terrain from Sarrisa Precision

I picked up a 6 part kit of Sarrisa Precisions destroyed SciFi Base set a week ago and it is really amazing stuff.  The kits build and paint super quick.  (Note: the game mat and desert rock terrain seen here are from GameMat.Eu) The kit from Sarrisa for all 6 pieces was $70 US.  Pretty good deal for what you get.

Gloss Varnish for modelers, Pledge changes a logo, but keeps the formula the same

For years modelers have known about Future Floor polish as a cheap, effective and durable product for gloss clear coating models.  Several years ago the Future logo and formula was bought by Pledge.  Well, recently Pledge "Floor Care Finish" has started disappearing from store shelves.  There are people selling it on eBay at down right goofy prices, but it appears this was just a rebranding effort by Pledge.

Hobby Hack for Space Marine Shoulder Pads

I have been using corks for painting sub-assemblies for a long time, but when you have 14 reavers to get through thats a lot of corks for bits and bobs.  I have seen people paint pads by taping them to a flat surface but I really wanted the ability to work with a lot of pads assembly line style and access every angle.  A good solution dawned on me the other day.  Old plastic sprue!  With some quick clipper work and a little super glue to add a handle/stand I had what I was looking for in about 10 minutes.

50 cents worth of PVC and never spill 7 dollars of ink again.

Was listening to one of my Fav Podcasts today and heard one of the guys lament spilling a pot of GW ink.  This is a Hobby Hack I learned from a buddy.  50 cent PVC joint available at most DIY stores.  Never spill again.  Also, the brush protector on your brushes, they are great at holding pots open on inks.  Pass this along.

Tutorial: Building an Arch Magos, that is worthy of leading your Army

I have been working on my Mechanicum Army for over 2 years now and am probably in the neighborhood of 10k worth of points I got tired of using stock Magos models to lead the army.  I have done many small conversion, like weapon swaps, this would be the first full scale one.  The project and idea for this model came from several sources, I took inspiration from The Eye of Horus Podcasts episode on demystifying the Mechanicum.  Tim's famous "The Martian Model" starting giving me some ideas, but I knew I wanted BIGGER.  I toyed with the various abeyance out there.  Even bought the FW one only to sell it later.  Final inspiration came from the Emperor of Mankind novel where they construct a Magos using a Domitar chassis.  The Cawl model had also appeared at the same time and I want to mash that looked into it also.

If there is one thing that has been consistently frustrating fro me it is trying to airbrush with non silver  metal paints.  Everything clogs, no matter the air pressure or thinner used.  I thought this was just a fact of the paints pigment composition, IT IS NOT.

Cyber Occularis in 3 hours.

Currently there is no Cyber Occularis model currently being made by FW.  This little 15 point Magos add-on is a very powerful addition.  It is basically a spotter that can radio back LOS data and more importantly confer the Magos' buffs to units he is not in range of.  You need atlas one as minimum.  I was going to play a small Con and had limited time to know one out.  I didn't just want to put a marker on the table.

Well, the summer is finally here, it has been a rough couple of semesters leaving precious little time to get to a paint brush, but I have hit it with a furry in the last two weeks.  I did a poor job of taking photos but there is still some good info in here.

8 Hour Tech Thralls

So I finally got to knocking out some thrall, in the end I did 50, and have 10 more on the way.  40 with LasLocks and 20 with Mitras.  I used the same techniques on both types.  When I started these i wanted them done well but quick, I hate painting infantry in repetition, so I went with a scheme where techniques could really speed things up, in the end I came up with a way to knock 10 of these guys out in 8 hours.  That does not include ink drying times.

I have several of the FW tiles, but I honestly wanted something that was more modular.  I saw the secret weapons tiles when they started their kickstarter and almost jumped in then, but I held back and waited for reviews.  Reviews were pretty darn good and when I went to Adepticon this year and got to see the tiles in person.  I was honestly blown away with the quality at the price point.  So I started planning my table.

The 24 tiles cost me a little over 230 US with my 10% SW discount.  In total I used about 100 dollars with of paint, masking material, glue, sand and acrylic finish.  Total project was 20 hours of work.  An air brush is essential.  You could do this with spray cans, but double your time layout.

Like just about every model FW makes these guys were just fun to assemble and paint.  They are detailed, but detailed in a way that doesn't make them a pain to paint if you use some simple technical tricks.

So Summer is finally here

So it has been a long absence for me here.  College was rough this semester so I had to just put my nose to the grindstone and put the paint brush down temporarily.  But I am back.  Look for updates pretty regular now.  This is a Knight I knocked out last year.  This year I will be working on my Shattered Legion stuff, more Mechanicum and my new love Arena Rex.  It is a Gladiator miniature game that has some of the most incredible sculpts in the business.

So I don't build a whole lot of loyalists, mainly a traitor kinda guy, but with book six I now have the ability to build some small units from various Legions and cobble them into a playable force. Hence the next project.
